Lutheran West Baseball didn’t wait around to unload on Brooklyn in their home opener on Monday. The host Longhorns posted 11 runs in the first inning–scoring eight times before there were two outs. The Longhorns collected nine hits in the first inning–twelve in the entire game.
Longhorn ace Zach Hammer-Huber (W, 1-0) got the complete game win. Hammer-Huber walked two and hit two Brooklyn batters but only gave up one hit in the game. The hit came with two outs in the fourth inning. Hammer-Huber struck out four in the inning–the first batter that he struck out in the inning reached on a wild pitch Longhorn catcher Jake Gross couldn’t locate because it was between the umpire’s feet.
Ben Gramsz, DJ Robinson, Aaron Blaine, and Ben Cruz all had multiple hits for the Longhorns. Blaine led the way with 3 RBIs.
The Longhorns look to sweep the season series from Brooklyn when they host the Hurricanes this afternoon. Brooklyn’s home field was determined to be unplayable thanks to a grounds crew mistake that left a four inch lip in several places in the infield.
