Lutheran High School West vs Beachwood High School
3 3
1 1   2
2 2   1

After digging themselves a 0-2 hole the Horns decided to be the predator rather than the prey. The defense locked down and began playing to feet through the middle. Rather than playing through balls the midfields were putting combos together to spark the offense. Grace Kandrach put one between the pipes for 20 yards out after Dana Quayle fought off the Bisons inside the box.
The momentum carried over to the second half when adjustments were made to run a tandem forward system. This took away the space in the middle of the field and allowed the Horns to form triangles. Laurel Willard took advantage of that space by driving the ball past the Bison goalie from 25 yards out. The Horns continued to dominate play in the knotted contest until the final 5 minutes. One of the Bison midfields cut up four of our defenders as we stabbed. She was able to slip the ball past “Klopp the Stop,” our goalie.
Rather than dropping our heads the Longhorns exhibited grit. Lutheran West pushes everyone up including their goalie to create opportunities. One such opportunity came with 55 seconds on the clock. Laurel Willard drove the direct kick towards the near post. The Bison keeper adjusted to make the save only to have the ball slip through her hands hitting her face. The team scrapped inside the six while Evelyn Albers was able to push the ball to the far bar while Lo Zielinski used her athleticism to push the ball past the last defender, finding the back of the net, with 35 seconds on the clock.
This tie demonstrated the character of this team and their willingness to play til the end. It also showed their ability to score against a sound defense.
