The Longhorn Varsity Softball team showed a tremendous improvement from past years as Lutheran West split a double header with Rocky River. Game 1 saw the Longhorns on top 10-7 heading in to the bottom of the 8th inning. Rocky River was able to manufacture 4 runs for the win, but nonetheless an impressive start. Game 2 was a back and forth contest and Lutheran West found themselves in the hole 10-4 heading in to the 4th inning. The bats came alive as the Longhorns extending the inning scoring 7 runs to take an 11-10 lead. The Pirates answered to score 2 in the bottom of the 4th. Junior Carina Cedeno made a big time play for the last out of the 5th inning throwing a runner out at home from center field. The Longhorns scored 4 in the bottom of the 6th to extend the lead to 15-12. Rocky River added one in 7th, but the Freshman pitcher Leslie Sullivan shut the door in the inning with a fly out to center and two strikeouts.
The Longhorns showed marked improvement under first year Head Coach Amy Sullivan. The team made no errors in the first game and generated 25 hits on the day. Coach Sullivan couldn’t be more proud of the toughness and resiliency of her team, “those girls never quit. They never hung their heads. They just kept grinding. I am so proud of what they did and how hard they worked. We had some mistakes, but they were so open to fixing it for the next time. It was a great day for our program.”
The Longhorns will host Villa Angela St. Joe’s on Tuesday 3/30 at 4:30pm.
