Boys Junior Varsity Football, Boys Varsity Football · Frank Petroff Steps Down as Head Football Coach

Head Football Coach Frank Petroff has stepped down after six years at the helm of the Longhorn Football program. Petroff served as the Defensive Coordinator for the 2013 and 2014 seasons under Dave Stupka before being promoted to lead Lutheran West in 2015. In the six years Petroff served as Head Coach, Lutheran West was 26-33 including a 7-3 season in 2019, just narrowly missing the playoffs. Petroff was instrumental in the continued improvement of the program since taking over in 2015, which is evident in four seasons of improved win totals (2016-2019) as well as increased program participation for the past four seasons.

Petroff developed several college caliber players for the Longhorns, including Andrew O’Hara ‘15 (Concordia Ann Arbor), Logan Denn ‘17 (Adrian College), Owen Albers ‘18 (Ohio Wesleyan University), Shawn Naim ‘19 (University of Akron), Gerald McHenry ‘19 (Concordia Ann Arbor), DeAnte Furry ‘19 (Condordia Ann Arbor), Nolan Ragland ‘20 (University of Rochester), Hunter Albers ‘20 (Muskingum University), Jonathan Bradley ‘20 (Otterbein University), David Busch ‘20 (Marietta University), Sean Kessel ‘20 (Ohio Wesleyan University), and Austin Kim ‘20 (Mercyhurst University).

Petroff says:

“I feel that this is the right time to step down as the head football coach at Lutheran High School West. The many demands of teaching and the time devoted to the football program made the decision a difficult one because of the outstanding football players that we have. Being the head coach is a full time position with year-round demands, and I have missed out on many important things pertaining to my family and friends. I want to thank the administration, faculty, alumni, and the coaches who have been on my staff for their support over the years. A special thank you to the parents and the young men that I have had the privilege to coach. Thank you to my wife for all of her support, understanding, and sacrifice when I was gone for all the long hours. The brotherhood and culture that have been established will always be with me, and I look forward to watching them become stronger and continue into the future. Go Longhorns!”

Ryan Miller, Athletic Director, says:

“Frank Petroff has led the football program with integrity and professionalism in his six-year tenure as the head coach. He has treated our student-athletes with great respect and has served as an impactful mentor for those around him. His competitive spirit has left a positive legacy for our football program. I can’t thank Coach Petroff enough for his time, energy, and commitment to Longhorn Football.”

Coach Petroff will continue to teach in the English Department at Lutheran West. Lutheran West will begin the search for the next head coach immediately.
