Senior Jalen Barnes eclipsed the 1,000 point mark last Saturday in a 79-63 win over Eastlake North. Barnes hit the 1,000 point mark with a step back three pointer early in the second quarter and finished with 28 points to lead the team. Barnes has shown considerable maturity over the last year, which has not gone unnoticed by Head Coach Nick Gallo, “Jalen has shown significant growth this season not only on the court but more importantly off the court. He really began to embrace the concept of Servant Leadership, which has made a huge impact in his ability to make those around him better. He is picking up his teammates, playing within the system, and has made conscientious effort to buy in to the cultural values we talk about on a daily basis. I’ve been really proud of his growth as a Senior.”
Barnes echoed Gallo’s comments, saying, “For years and years, I’ve been wanting to take on this role. Last year, I had a lot of learning to do. After the season from last year, I had to change and make a difference. A key part to the team is my teammates. Lifting up my teammates and helping them to become a better player doesn’t get any better. They’re having more fun this year, giving it all they got on the court and that’s all I can ask for from my teammates. If my teammates are happy, I’m happy.”
With Barnes’ growth comes opportunity at the next level as he has recently verbally committed to Notre Dame College in South Euclid and will sign a National Letter of Intent this February. The Longhorns travel to Hawken this Saturday for a triple header beginning at 4:00pm.
